Morning milking this time of year starts in the dark. Into the house they go to milk, then back to the barn for a feeder full of alfalfa for breakfast.

It looks like it will be a few days before the sun

It looks like it will be a few days before the sun shines again after today, so I took my time doing chores this morning and soaked up the beautiful sunrise and warm weather before the rain and snow hit later today. I love a good snow, but I'd be lying if I said I wasn't ready for spring!

Most goat owners are starting their kidding season

Most goat owners are starting their kidding season right now, but we're just starting our breeding for the year. We've been milking every day for the past 11 months and we plan to travel some this spring/early summer so we were holding off on breeding the girls. Quanah came into heat today and I decided we had waited long enough and decided to let Diesel be her a boyfriend for the day - which made her very happy! If she settles, she will kick off our kidding season in mid-June. We will continue milking for another month then dry the girls off and have a 4-month break. We'll appreciate the downtime, but miss the milk so we've been freezing as much as we can.
